Bracebridge, ON Community Information

Bracebridge is a small town located in the Muskoka District Municipality just 2 hours north of Toronto. The area is very popular with tourists, day-trippers, and vacationers, most of whom use one of the two main access routes to visit. These are Highway 11 running north to south, and Highway 118 running east to west. Downtown Bracebridge is centred around a picturesque waterfall on the mighty Muskoka River.

The area around Bracebridge is home to a number of smaller communities like Lakewood, Springdale Park, Clear Lake, and Fraserburg.

Gravenhurst is another town of similar size in the area, located just 15km south of Bracebridge along Highway 11.

There is also a small regional airport - Muskoka Airport - just 5km outside of Bracebridge, providing easy access to Toronto.

Education:

Students in Bracebridge can attend a number of elementary schools and two high schools. Public school students are served by the Trillium Lakelands District School Board.

There is also a tertiary institution - Georgian College - specializing in local industries, services, and trades.

History

Permanent settlement in Bracebridge traces its history back to the 1860s. Once various transportation routes were established, the area flourished as a hub for local trade and business. The nearby waterfalls also served as a handy power-source for various industries.

Bracebridge was eventually incorporated as a town in its own right in 1875, and by 1894 it was the first town in Ontario with a dedicated hydroelectric power station.
