Parry Sound Attractions & Amenities

Parry Sound is really a coastal beach town, situated on the rocky shores of a vast freshwater ocean. As such, the town is known for its water-related activities (as well as the gorgeous views).

Boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing are all popular activities during the warmer months. Special activities include an annual dragonboat race or attending the local prestigious sailing school, Sail Parry Sound. For the more terrestrially inclined, there is an annual ATV Jamboree, many guided ATV tours and trails, and a number of golf courses to enjoy, as well as Waubuno Beach.

When the water freezes over, there’s ice skating, hockey, and fishing. The winter landscape is perfect for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Parry Sound is known for being the birthplace of famous hockeyist Bobby Orr, and the town’s community centre and arena are named after him. Other prominent attractions within the town of Parry Sound itself are the waterfront trail and Tower Hill Lookout.

As for more natural attractions, the area around Parry Sound forms part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covering 347,000 hectares. There’s also the Park-to-Park Trail connecting Killbear Park with the Algonquin Provincial Park.

History:

The waters around Parry Sound were surveyed in the 19th century, and named by Captain Henry Bayfield after Arctic explorer Sir William Edward Parry.

Later, when a town was established in 1857, it took the name of that body of water. The town was eventually incorporated in 1887.
