McKellar

McKellar is a rural township in southeastern Ontario, near the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, between Lake Simcoe and Lake Nipissing. The township covers around 200 square kilometres and is home to three small communities: Broadbent, Hurdville, and a town of the same name, McKellar. It is known for its picturesque, lakefront cottages, welcoming community, and gorgeous forests which are truly a sight to see in the autumn.

McKellar, Ontario Community Information

McKellar falls within the Parry Sound District, a large area stretching from Lake Joseph and Woods Bay in the south, to the Algonquin Provincial Park in the east, to Georgian Bay in the west, and Lake Nipissing in the north. Other communities in this area are Parry Sound, Burk’s Falls, Sundridge, Nobel, Pointe au Baril, Britt, South River, Restoule, and Powassan.

Parry Sound is the largest town in this region and lies approximately 20 minutes southwest of McKellar town. The road connecting these towns, and the main route through McKellar township, is Highway 124, which continues north towards North Bay.

As with most of the southeast Ontario area, the landscape around McKellar is defined by shallow, rocky land covered in dense forests and interspersed with rugged, island-filled lakes. The largest of these is Manitouwabing Lake, which hosts many cottages and holiday homes on its lengthy shores. The lake stretched up towards McKellar town, where it links to McKellar Lake. There are also some small farms in the area, especially around McKellar town.

As with most of Ontario’s cottage country, McKellar is a great place to enjoy rural beauty and outdoor fun, from boating, swimming, and fishing, to hiking, camping, and hunting. The winters support cross country skiing and snowmobiling, while the summers are great for boating and relaxing at home or on the shore.

The town itself supports many fun events, like ice fishing and tree-planting events.

There are also many natural areas to visit, like the Ahmic Forest and Rock Barrens, Dutcher Lake Conservation Reserve, and the expansive Algonquin Park further east. You can also visit other destinations nearby, like Parry Sound, with access to the great lakes, beaches, restaurants, shopping, and other cultural sites to take in.

McKellar is home to some outdoor summer camps like Camp Kodiak and Camp Manitou.

McKellar History

McKellar was originally known as Armstrong’s Rapids, but changed its name after the opening of a post office in 1870. The area and town were named after Archibald McKellar, who was a member of the legislature of both Ontario and Canada in the late 19th century.
