Muskoka Lakes, ON History

Settlement in the Muskoka Lakes area expanded during the late 19th century due to the government offering land as an incentive for the production of timber resources.

Around this time, the local politician William Robinson named the three largest lakes in the area. Two he named after his friend and associate Joseph Rousseau, and the third he named after a First Nations chief, Muesqua Ukee. This name was transposed as “Muskoka”.

In 1971, a number of local townships in the area were amalgamated to form the Township of Muskoka Lakes.
